Scholars & Visiting Researchers

If you are interested in coming to UIC from abroad or from another U.S. academic institution to participate in a research-focused program, please contact a specific academic department for additional information on available opportunities. You may also find employment openings on the UIC Job Board. The Office of International Services does not facilitate placements at the university.

Send your questions about obtaining your visa or reporting your status to the J-1 EV Scholar Team at oisj1@uic.edu.

Once the academic department confirms your affiliation/appointment, they will work directly with OIS to initiate the appropriate U.S. immigration documentation, pending eligibility, as well as provide pre-arrival resources to assist you with settling into life at UIC.

Fulbright Scholars Heading link

Prospective Foreign Fulbright Scholars wishing to join UIC should apply for the program through their home country’s Fulbright Commission or the U.S. Embassy in their home country. Please visit the Fulbright website for more information on getting started. OIS does not issue immigration paperwork for inbound Fulbright scholars since sponsorship in the J-1 Exchange Visitor status is provided directly by Fulbright. OIS does not charge any fees for Fulbrighters.

J-1 EV Scholar Transfers Heading link

If you are currently a J-1 Exchange Visitor at another U.S. institution, connect with your prospective UIC academic department to initiate the DS-2019 request process with our office.

Once the process is initiated, you will complete the J-1 Research Scholar EV Applicant Form, paying particular attention to section 6.

If you have applied for a waiver of the 212(e) Two-Year Home Residency Requirement, please contact OIS at oisj1@uic.edu prior to submission of your transfer-in request.

You will not be able to receive your UIC DS-2019 before you check in with OIS. This may only occur on, or after, your “SEVIS Transfer Release Date”.

Do not make plans to travel internationally during the transfer process to UIC.
