DOS announces updated policy on timing of visa application submissions for new international students
On February 17, 2023, the U.S. Department of State (DOS) updated its policy regarding how far in advance new international students may apply for a student visa. New international students are now able to apply for an F or M visa up to 365 days in advance of the start date of their course of study, an increase from the previous limit of 120 days. For details relating to the student visa process, please visit the DOS Student Visa page here.
Please note that new international students continue to not be permitted to enter the U.S. on an approved student visa (F or M) more than 30 calendar days before the start date of their classes.
Finally, please remember that in general, it is recommended that new international students apply for their student visa as early as possible before classes begin, in case of any unforeseen delays in the visa application process.
OIS will continue to monitor these developments and will update UIC departments, international students, exchange visitors and the international community accordingly. As always, if there are any questions or concerns about this announcement, please feel free to contact us at ois@uic.edu or (312) 996-3121.
