J-1 EV Scholar Departure

J-1 EV Scholars must notify OIS when they permanently depart the U.S. or no longer need the benefits associated with their nonimmigrant status sponsored by UIC. This notification allows OIS to appropriately update your immigration record both at the University and with the U.S. government.

Submitting a scholar departure to OIS Heading link

If you will permanently leave UIC for reasons of your appointment ending, early resignation, or termination, your department must initiate a Scholar Departure Form in myOIS. The form will ask you and your department to confirm your last day at UIC. The form should be submitted at least two weeks prior to departure.

Upon receipt of a completed and signed form, OIS will then ensure your J-1 EV record is closed out accordingly, based on the data entered on the e-form.

Additional considerations

  • EVs have a 30-day grace period to remain in the U.S. after completion of their program. This is recreational time only, not time to continue program activities.
  • If you end your EV program more than 15 days early, OIS will issue a final DS-2019 to you for “Shorten Program.”
  • Student Interns will need to submit their final J-1 Student Intern Evaluation E-Form in myOIS.
  • Research Scholars/Professors incur a 24-month bar from their completion date.

Situations where the Scholar Departure E-Form is not applicable Heading link

You do not need to submit the Scholar Departure E-Form if you are:

  • Transferring your J-1 EV Scholar program to a new institution. Please see J-1 EV Scholar Transfers for more information.
  • Changing to another immigration status at UIC.
