F-1 Student

The majority of international students at UIC are studying on an F-1 visa. The following pages explain how to maintain F-1 status and the various benefits associated with this nonimmigrant visa category.

Keeping your contact information up-to-date, accurately documenting your financial support when necessary and meeting full-time enrollment requirements are the basic steps you must take to maintain your F-1 immigration status in the U.S.

Your academic plans and immigration status are closely connected. When a change occurs with your academics an update to your immigration record is likely needed. Learn about common academic-related immigration updates below.

The F-1 visa is first and foremost a student visa. Your primary objective while in the U.S. on an F-1 visa should always be your studies. That said, your F-1 visa does carry employment benefits that allow you to work on-campus and gain practical training in your field of study. The links below outline what you need to know with regards to employment and the F-1 visa.

Depending on your situation, you may need to take additional action on your F-1 record beyond basic status maintenance, academic changes, or employment. Below are other areas in which OIS supports F-1 student status maintenance.

Some international students may want to have family accompany them during their time in the U.S. Depending on the situation, you might decide to add that family member to your F-1 record as a dependent.

If you have a question about your immigration status, you can connect with an OIS advisor via email, phone, or individual advising appointment. Current international students can email ois@uic.edu, and prospective international students can use newintl@uic.edu. All students can reach our front desk at +1 (312) 996-3121.
